He has been tasked with turning around the Red Devils’ fortunes since he took over, with the club currently 14th in the Premier League and without a win in Europe for over a year.

Meanwhile, Postecoglou has compared the Dutchman’s efforts at United to his own at Tottenham ahead of this week’s Carabao Cup clash with Man City.

“No, it’s not a shock,” said Postecoglou, who led Spurs to victory over Manchester United less than a month ago.

“It’s disappointing, but it’s almost inevitable that you’ll be in the spotlight.”

“If you look at Eric, he’s been there for two years, he’s won trophies every year and they finished third in his first year. If he was here with that record, would he get fired? I don’t know.”

“I don’t know if he’ll be under the same spotlight as before because everyone tells me all I have to do is win trophies. But I feel like it’s going to be the same because of the nature of the world today.”

Spurs have not won a trophy since 2008, when they won the League Cup.

For Ten Hag, lead the team to win the League Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
