Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Viech is expecting Kadarius Toney to become the Chiefs’ number one wide receiver in 2023 after losing two wide receivers. ‘He’s an outstanding slot winger, running back and runner. He’s available if you need him. But I don’t know if his game has limits or not. Because he has a vertical game,’ Viech said of Toney. ‘I don’t know if (his college team at Florida) was a guy who pushed the ball vertically down the field. The Florida alumnus entered the league as a first-round draft pick in the 2021 class. ‘It’s a fair question to (ask) has he ever played against a quarterback who likes to push the ball down the field? We have high hopes for him,’ Viech said. ‘He’s a first-round pick for a reason. There’s a reason why we traded him and we feel he has first-round talent.’

Toney completed 14 of 17 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns in seven games with the Chiefs in the 2022 season. In three post-season games, the 24-year-old wide receiver caught seven passes. Targeted 10 times for 50 yards and a touchdown in the Super Bowl. 

‘We got him here in the middle of the season. So you can do a lot more with him,’ Viech said. ‘He’s very smart, so it’s not [a] superficial idea or idea. We were amazed at how quickly he picked it up. I think the sky’s the limit for him.’ 

Toney is part of the Chiefs’ wide receiver group, along with former 2022 second-round draft pick Sky More, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Justin Watson among others. To Richie James, who just signed a contract this off-season, and Rookie Rice, a 2nd round draft pick.
