     The new striker gave an interview before Chelsea play their final game in the Club World Cup group stage against Tunis on Wednesday.

    “You never know if it’s the right decision, but you have to trust your instincts and hope it works out,” he said. “You have to take your time. It took me two or three days to talk to people and decide my future.”

    One of the people Delap consulted was Chelsea star Cole Palmer, with whom he first played at Man City when he was 15.

    “I asked him what I wanted to ask him. He told me what I wanted to know, but I don’t like too much information. In the end, it was my decision, so I wanted to clear my head.”

    Palmer has emerged as a model for Chelsea after two sensational seasons and Delap was asked whether he hopes to emulate his old academy team-mate.

    “Yeah, that’s the goal,” he said. “I think we’re both in a similar position and he’s done it, so hopefully I can do it too.”

    Manchester United were reportedly favourites to sign Delap in May, but a Europa League final defeat to Spurs and a poor run of form in the league, meaning he will not be playing in Europe next season, have weighed on Delap’s decision.

    “It’s not the most important thing because I’m also looking ahead to the next season, but it’s also part of it,” Delap said.

    The son of former Stoke City and Derby County midfielder Rory Delap, he began his Manchester City career under current Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, scoring 20 goals and winning the Premier League 2 Player of the Season award as he guided the Italian’s Under-21s to the 2020-21 title.

    “I have a good relationship with the manager,” he said of Maresca. “I know how he plays. I’ve played in this system before. Now it’s very similar, but with a few changes. I know a lot of the players here and the project of the club. How they see the future. That’s what excites me.”
