Former Netherlands midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has advised Frenkie de Jong to return to former club Ajax Amsterdam from Barcelona in the summer of 2025 in a bid to revive his career, Diario AS reported on Monday. 

Frankie chose to follow his dream by moving from Ajax Amsterdam to Barcelona in the summer of 2019. Although he played a key role in the early stages, his role has diminished in recent times with the club reportedly looking to sell the player to solve its financial problems. However, the player chose to stay with the Blaugrana. 

However, Frankie’s future remains unclear as his contract expires in the summer of 2026, meaning he could move next summer if he chooses not to extend his contract.

Former Netherlands striker Marco van Basten had previously urged the attention on Frenkie to be reduced so the 27-year-old could focus on getting back to playing at his own pace, with former Netherlands midfielder Van der Vaart now going one step further by advising the player to return to Ajax in the future.

‘He did a great job against Hungary but he can do better and has to do more. He has achieved a lot but now he has to get fit.’

‘He is a great player who will be very useful for the Netherlands national team. If it were up to me, I would advise him to go home [to Ajax], he doesn’t need to travel anymore,’ said Van der Vaart. ( sunlit1688 )
