Liverpool fans, as well as fans around the world, were shocked by the news of the deaths of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre in a car accident in Spain.

A growing crowd turned out to pay their respects on the grass outside the Main Stand, where flowers, cards, team shirts, photographs and balloons were laid out in tribute, with many consoling one another and sharing memories of the Portuguese forward.

British Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Liverpool Mayor Steve Rotheram visited the memorial, laid wreaths and paid their respects to Jota. 

Speaking to reporters, Rayner, who was already in Liverpool to inspect progress on Everton’s new stadium, said news of Jota’s death from the car crash was a “complete shock”, especially given that he had only been married a few days earlier and had three young children.

“Being here in Liverpool today is a clear demonstration of the love and care people have for his wife, children and family.”

While the mayor of Rotherham said he initially did not want to believe the news, thinking it might be fake. “In today’s world, it’s easy to think that something like this might not be true, but when it was confirmed, I felt heartbroken.”

He also said Jota was a firm favourite with Liverpool fans and had a song written especially for him. When asked what the Portuguese forward meant to the city of Liverpool, the mayor replied: “Not just the goals, but the success he brought to the city, which will never be forgotten.”
