    Asked about Kavanagh’s decision to keep his distance during the altercation, Gallagher said: “I think if you get in the middle of that, you have two problems.”

    “First of all, you risk getting hurt. If a player hits you, that player is in big trouble. So the referee doesn’t want to be in that position because he might accidentally get hit. But that doesn’t mean the player is free from liability.”

    “Second, you have a much wider view, so you can see who’s running from a distance, who’s coming in to join the fight, who’s coming in to stop the fight.”

    “So standing back and watching from a distance is a good option. When you see a situation, you choose what you want to do. Your teammates will look at it, VAR will look at it, if there is anything else, the FA will deal with it.”
