Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has revealed he has been a huge fan of New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers since he was a kid, but he still gets to face his idol twice a year in the AFC East, NFL Network reported Wednesday. ( kindee1688 )
“I’ve known Aaron a little bit over the years and I think we’re pretty close,” Allen said. “I wouldn’t say we text regularly. I don’t really call him. I FaceTime him. He usually replies, which is a big plus. I know he doesn’t reply to a lot of people.”
But they won’t have to FaceTime in week one, as the Bills face the Jets on Monday Night Football, which will be a key battle between one of the favorites for Super Bowl glory, the Buffaloes, and the up-and-coming ‘Gang Green.’
“I’ve been a big fan of his since I was a little kid,” said Allen, who is 13 years Rodgers’ junior. “Having his jersey and trying to replicate what he did on the field, he’s a very special player. I think he’s the most talented pitcher of all time. Playing against him twice a year, it’s a battle.”
The two have faced off twice before, with Rodgers’ Packers taking on Allen’s Bills, who were starting Game 4 of his rookie season in 2018, before Allen’s Buffaloes got revenge by beating the Butters last season, 27-17.
As Rodgers approaches 40 this season, Allen admits his path to the Super Bowl is a bit more difficult than Rodgers’ in an AFC competition full of top-notch quarterbacks.
“There are a lot of great quarterbacks in the AFC right now,” Allen said. “These games are going to be dogfights, and it’s not about how you beat them, it’s about whether you beat them. That’s all we’re trying to do. We’re trying to score one more point than our opponent.”
“As a quarterback, I don’t look at who’s on that side of the football. I don’t play with them. I play with their defense and their defensive coach. But there’s something that’s going to influence the play calls and the decisions based on who’s there. We don’t want to give them the ball back. We don’t want to give them a short field.”
