“I’ve been through it too many times,” Johnson said after offseason practice. “I’ll be excited when we win in November and December and we make some changes and get to the playoffs. That’s when I’ll be excited.”

Johnson made similar remarks before the Bears kicked off the 2024 season amid rumours about draft No. 1 quarterback Caleb Williams, and the 25-year-old cornerback’s comments proved farsighted after Chicago’s failure to make the cut last season and Matt Eberflus’ midseason firing.

For Johnson, all the talk and praise from the spring and summer were meaningless, making it easy to overlook those voices.

“That has nothing to do with me,” Johnson said. “The only thing that has to do with me is the work I put in and the work we do as a unit, moving in the right direction. Other than that, the conversations, the feedback, all that stuff. I mean, feedback doesn’t win you any games.”
