Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has revealed financial constraints led him to trade 27-year-old safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia. kindee1688
“Every dollar you spend is a dollar less you spend on some young players that you might want to keep,” Roseman said. “It’s important for us to move forward, and again, it’s a tough decision. We’re not asking anybody to agree with them, but it’s part of our job.”
The Eagles sent Gardner-Johnson to Houston in exchange for guard Kenyon Green and a late-round 2026 draft pick. The deal gave Philadelphia more financial flexibility, but it also lost several starters this offseason, including Josh Sweat, Milton Williams and Meghi Becton.
“I think if you just look at C.J.’s move without thinking too much about it, it obviously doesn’t give you the full picture of our current situation,” Roseman explained. “Chauncey has done a great job for us in his two years with us. Obviously, he’s been to two Super Bowls in two years. He’s our starting safety.”
‘When you look at our team and you look at the number of high-paid players that are getting contracts, we have eight players that are getting $15 million or more. We have eight starters from the 2022 to 2024 drafts that are on Super Bowl teams. Those players don’t have long-term contracts.’
‘In those drafts, we probably have five or six players competing for a starting spot, so you have a lot of players coming up that aren’t on long-term contracts and a lot of players that are on long-term contracts, and we don’t want to be in a situation where we’re getting rid of 20 players in a year.’
‘And we’ve been very fortunate to be very aggressive in our approach to retaining our players and signing players in free agency, and that’s consistent with the draft and having young players. Of course, the important thing to do is draft well and then retain your players. We want to make sure that in the future we have the opportunity to do that as well.
