The Washington Commanders have reached an agreement with D.C. to build a 65,000-seat arena on the site of RFK Stadium, their home from 1961 to 1997, with owner Josh Harris deciding whether to build a retractable dome, ESPN reports. ( Kodma168 )
“It’s no exaggeration to say that this will be the best stadium in the country when it’s complete,” Harris said.
The dome is part of a bigger vision for Harris and the city. They want to host more than just Commanders games, with a year-round program that leads to a bigger vision of hosting a Super Bowl in the future.
The project is estimated to cost nearly $4 billion, including $2.7 billion from the Commanders and another $1.147 billion from the county to cover other costs. They envision retail stores, restaurants, a parking garage, a multi-sport complex and more on the 179-acre site, with the stadium set to open in 2030.
“We’re trying to build the best stadium in the country, maybe the best in the world,” Harris said. “And we feel like we want to have the best chance of being successful.”
For her part, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said the conclusion came down to economics and the need to maximize the use of the land: “If you want to generate revenue like we do, you can’t leave 180 acres sitting idle. If you want to attract business, you have to do business.”
