Zen suffered a stroke in 2022 that left her with brain damage on her left side and required her to be on a ventilator during her hospital stay, with family by her side in his hometown of Detroit as they awaited news about Hermon’s NFL future.
“On behalf of the Pittsburgh Steelers organization, I offer my deepest condolences to Derrick Hermon and his family during this difficult time,” Steelers chairman Art Rooney said in a statement.
“While we are thrilled to have selected Derrick in the first round of the NFL Draft, our hearts are saddened as we grieve the passing of his mother, Tiffany Zane. We will support Derrick and his family to the fullest extent possible during this time of grief. At a time like this, we hope Derrick finds comfort in the love and support of the Steelers organization and fans around the world.”
‘Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Derrick’s family.’
Hermon, for his part, told reporters he would be leaving the draft party to visit his mother in the hospital Thursday night. “It’s a little bit of a happy and sad feeling. My mom’s not with me. She’s in the hospital on a ventilator right now. So it’s a little bit of a happy and sad feeling because she’s worked just as hard as I have to get to this moment,” he said.
‘After all those brain surgeries, my mom didn’t give up. She kept taking me to practice, to work, and from the start of college, I kept thinking, ‘Why can’t I keep going? ‘
