Kodma168 Denver Broncos tap former basketball player Caleb Lohner to mold NFL wide receiver following Jimmy Graham
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton says he sees a lot of work to be done after drafting college basketball player Caleb Lohner to develop him into an NFL wide receiver, NFL Network reports. Kodma168
Peyton has experience turning college basketball players into NFL star wide receivers before serving as head coach of the New Orleans Saints, who selected Jimmy Graham in the third round of the 2010 draft before the Saints selected Utah’s Lohner in the seventh round (No. 241) this year.
Like Graham, Lohner only played one season in college football, but his 6-foot-7 frame made him a perfect fit for the Broncos.
“It’s tough,” Payton said of the decision to draft a player with so little experience. “Going back to Jimmy Graham, I think he had 14 or 15 receptions. Both played one season. Both were very good basketball players. In Jimmy’s case, it was so much more. He was brought in. We’re in the late stages of this draft and you’re rooting for certain players.”
‘You see the upside in a 6-foot-7, 245-pound player. You see the basketball skills, which is easy at a high level. Then you see a little bit of playing time, but it’s enough to get you to watch them. I think another thing that helped was watching him play at Big 12 Pro Day. There’s not many games where you get to see the skills, and it takes a lot of work. If it plays out like it did last time, we’ll be excited.’
‘Back in our league, historically, (Antonio) Gates was signed undrafted, so it’s one of those things that’s kind of a physical thing for a winger. It’s not like they’re making them less. They might play volleyball or basketball, but they’re shining.’
‘When you get a chance to see him play football, he’s going through a season of pads, but his mobility, his height, his weight, his hand-eye coordination, there’s a lot of positive things to develop and we’re excited about that.’ ( Kodma168 )
