Kodma168 Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan plans to play into his 40s like fellow pros Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Philip Rivers.
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, 33, revealed Tuesday that he could play football until he’s 40 if he’s as physically fit as fellow quarterbacks Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Philip Rivers, ESPN reports. Kodma168
Asked if he could play football until he’s 40, the one-time MVP quarterback said, ‘I think so. I think, first of all, I’ve got a long way to go until I get there. But if you’re healthy and you can still play at a high level and all those things, I don’t see why it’s not possible,’ Ryan admitted.
In his 11-year career, Ryan missed just two games in 2009 due to a toe injury. He played 1,024 snaps last season and was the only quarterback in the league to do so in 2017.
‘In terms of training and recovery, whether it’s massages or stretching, there are a lot of things I’m doing now that I didn’t do earlier in my career that I think keep you healthy for your career. I think those are all variables that can help you prolong your career,’ Ryan said.
Many older quarterbacks can still play at a high level, such as New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who turns 40 on Jan. 15; Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, who turns 37 this month; and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who is 41 and still helping his team win another division title after leading the Patriots to the Super Bowl last season at age 40.
“It’s great to see,” Ryan said of his quarterback peers. “They’re all playing at a high level, obviously. I think the experience at this position really helps, seeing a lot of different things and being able to play in the pocket. The way those guys play helps them play longer. It’s amazing. It’s cool to see, and it’s a motivation for guys who are younger than me.”
Ryan will turn 34 on May 17 and is under contract with the Falcons through 2023 after signing a new five-year, $150 million deal. If he stays through the end of the deal, he will be 38. ( Kodma168 )
