Pittsburgh Steelers owner and chairman Art Rooney has revealed he is considering re-signing Russell Wilson or Justin Fields this offseason, ESPN reports.  ( Kodma168 )

The Steelers ended the 2024 season on a five-game losing streak that led to a wild-card exit after a 14-28 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, with questions over the futures of quarterbacks Wilson and Fields, who are set to hit free agency in March. 

But Rooney, as owner, plans to bring one of them back on a new deal, as keeping both Wilson and Fields is unlikely. 

“I wouldn’t close the door on it, but I don’t think it’s a possibility,” Rooney said when asked if he would keep both Wilson and Fields. “I think they both see themselves as the real deal and I don’t know if they want to work together again next year, so I don’t think we’re going to bring them back either.”

Wilson started as the Steelers’ starting center but injuries kept him out of the first six games of the season. Fields started and went 4-2, but the Steelers’ offense was limited before Wilson returned to give the Steelers a boost with his accurate passing and experience advantage, most notably throwing for 414 yards and three touchdowns in a Week 13 win over Joe Burrow’s Cincinnati Bengals.

The Steelers know they have to bring one of them back to sign in 2025, even though neither is a long-term answer at quarterback. 

“They’re both talented quarterbacks and I’d rather sign one of them,” Rooney said. “That’s the most important thing and I think that gives us the best chance moving forward.” 

‘We have a quarterback position to fill, so there’s a vacancy there. I wouldn’t be surprised if we looked at it in this year’s draft or next year’s, so that has to be the most important thing.’ 

‘I think both Russ and Justin have shown promise at some point in the season and I think they can be starters in this league, so we’ll make a decision and they’ll make a decision as well.’
