Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said the Chiefs plan to work out a new deal with Trey Smith to keep the 25-year-old guard with the organization long-term, according to NFL Network. kuiper999
The Chiefs chose to keep young guard Smith on the roster after deciding to trade veteran guard Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears this offseason, and Chiefs GM Veach confirmed the club has a long-term plan with the 25-year-old after franchise-tagging the former sixth-round 2021 draft pick for $23.402 million on a one-year deal that made him the league’s highest-paid guard.
“Hopefully we can get it done. There’s no lack of interest or intent or desire on our part,” Veach said of working on a long-term deal with Smith. “There’s still a lot of players that are likely to be drafted, and they have a lot of work to do, so we’ve had a lot of phone calls and a lot of emails. I guess once the draft is over and we’re focused on taking care of the players here and trying to hold onto them.”
‘The CAA is one of the top agencies in terms of the players they produce every year, so I’m sure once everything is settled on both sides, we’ll be in a position to continue these negotiations and hopefully make progress on that. There’s no secret there, we want to lock Trey in.’
Smith has developed into one of the best right guards in the NFL, and the 25-year-old has room to improve, and the Chiefs are betting he can do just that.
The Chiefs recently gave big money to center Creed Humphrey and right tackle Javon Taylor, both worth $20 million a year, and also signed free agent Jaylon More this offseason. ( kuiper999 )
