The NFL has implemented a new helmet rule this season in an effort to protect players from on-field danger, but the change has created confusion among players and referees, especially among the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles players, who were briefed on the rule by NFL referees this week, ESPN reported Sunday. kuiper999
ESPN’s Tim McManus reports that several Eagles players were disappointed and confused after being presented with the new helmet rule by NFL referees, who questioned the referees but did not provide clear answers.
“We tried to ask for a better understanding, but they still couldn’t give us a clear answer,” Eagles linebacker Nigel Bradham told ESPN. “They couldn’t give us what we were looking for.”
The new rule states that a player will be penalized 15 yards and can be fined or ejected if his head is lowered while making contact with an opposing player’s helmet. There have been videos of players who have been found guilty of violating the law, including Malcolm Jenkins’ tackle on New England Patriots wide receiver Brandin Coogs in the latest Super Bowl. However, players and referees have been confused by the rule.
“If I play like that 10 times, there’s 10 flags,” Jenkins told ESPN of the new rule. “You can’t slow down and think about the rules in a split second. The game is so fast, the rules can’t keep up. I think it’s something to consider, but I don’t let it affect the way I play.”
Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said he and his team will be emphasizing the new rules in team meetings and on the field throughout training camp to help improve understanding.
“It’s been good communication to us and it’s our job to communicate to our players about these rules,” Pederson told ESPN. ( kuiper999 )
