“Hopefully before the end of the summer he will be wearing a Southampton shirt,” Martin said.

“Otherwise I would cry myself to sleep. It’s taking longer than I thought. We have to be patient. I wish he had been here last week, or even four weeks ago.”

“I hope at some point we can show enough love and give West Ham enough money (for him),”

Downs made 37 appearances for the Saints last season, having played 35 for the Hammers the previous campaign.
