Former France defender Raphael Varane revealed on Aurelien Chuameni’s podcast on Wednesday that he considered leaving Real Madrid in 2018, before it finally happened three years later when he decided to join Manchester United in the summer of 2021.

Varane joined Real Madrid from Lens in the summer of 2011 and enjoyed a successful spell at the club before deciding to sign for Manchester United in the summer of 2021, before moving to Como last summer, where he retired in late September after suffering a knee injury.

The former France defender has admitted he first considered leaving Real Madrid back in 2018, before it actually happened three years later.

‘You don’t wake up one morning and decide to leave Madrid,’ Varane began. ‘It was 2018, after we won our fourth Champions League. It felt like nothing special, it was just normal. When you win the Champions League, people are asking for the next one. ‘

Varane also added that winning the 2018 World Cup made him feel like he had achieved everything.

‘I’ve won everything, I’ve had everything. I’ve come to a point where I have to rethink and reorganize my career. I want to experience something new, to experience it again.’

He continued on about his move to Manchester United, saying: ‘I want to continue feeling that way. I don’t have the words to describe how I live in Madrid, but it was time. I wanted something different.’

‘In England, especially at Manchester United, football is driven by passion. You get to experience it up close. I have no regrets.’

Despite deciding to leave the club in 2021, Varane insists his memories of the club remain special. ‘Madrid, I can’t explain it, it’s very special, but I’ve experienced it. I wanted something different. For me, England and Manchester have something special. ‘
