    The England international started the 1-0 home win over Leicester City and missed a penalty midway through the first half after Mads Hermansen’s effort was saved, but Marc Cucurella scored the winner in the second half to give his team all three points.

    After the game, Maresca refused to criticise Palmer, revealing that the player had been ill and had not trained the day before, but played because he wanted to help the team secure a place in the UEFA Champions League.

    “Cole didn’t train yesterday (Saturday) because he wasn’t feeling well. This morning he woke up and asked if he could play to help the team qualify for the Champions League,” Maresca said.

    Next up, Chelsea will host Copenhagen in the second leg of their Europa Conference League last-16 tie on Thursday after winning the first leg 2-1. ( mungme168 )
