Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales is confident former 2024 first-round draft pick Xavier Legette can be a wide receiver on the same level as Pittsburgh Steelers newcomer DK Metcalf, NFL Network reports.  mungmee168

The Panthers were in the market for a number one wide receiver this offseason, with Metcalf also interested, before the Seattle Seahawks agreed to trade the 27-year-old wide receiver to the Steelers, but Canales believes Legette has the potential to reach Metcalf’s level.

‘I think we have that guy,’ Canales said. ‘I think it’s Xavier.’ 

The Panthers selected Legette with the 2024 first-round draft (No. 32). He caught 49 passes for 497 yards and four touchdowns, and Canales believes the 24-year-old wide receiver will improve further in his second year of professional football.

‘I think it’s up to the coaches to continue developing him and letting him grow at his own pace, so for me, the goal for Xavier Leggett is to try to take the next step. This will be his first off-season with us from phase one all the way through and I’d love to see where it goes.’

Legette missed the offseason after undergoing foot surgery, but the 24-year-old wide receiver made his full recovery, missing just one game during his rookie season.

‘Xavier is doing a lot of things,’ Canales said. ‘He’s a hard worker and that’s a good thing. He’s doing it the right way. He’s going for it. He’s there. He’s doing things.’

‘You can’t take him out of the building. He’s there early and he’s back late, so he’s one of those guys. So he’s doing all the right things and with hard work, it’s paying off.’ 

At 6’3″ and 227 pounds, Legette is a big wide receiver who has drawn comparisons to Metcalf, who is 6’4″ and 235 pounds. Canales believes Legette will be a similar defensive threat to Metcalf and would be a great addition to young quarterback Bryce Young.

“You’ve got a guy who’s 6’3″, 225 pounds and runs a 4.3,” Canales said. “And he’s a player and it’s on film and that’s it. Let’s take the next step with him.” ( mungmee168 )
