Julian Nagelsmann, 37, has announced the appointment of Joshua Kimmik, a midfielder from Bayern Munich, as the new captain of the German national team, with Antonio Rudiger, a defender from Real Madrid, and Kai Havertz, a striker from Arsenal, as vice-captains, ahead of the German team’s matches against Hungary and the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League on September 7 and 10, according to Sky Germany on Monday.  ( vox888 )

Kimmik, 29, has never been permanent captain of Bayern Munich or Germany before, but he has often stepped up when other players are injured or unavailable, wearing the armband 17 times during his 91 appearances for Germany. With the likes of Ilkay Gundoan, Manuel Neuer, Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller all leaving their national teams after Euro 2024, the mantle of captain will be Kimmik’s new man. 

Nagelsmann has confirmed that Kimmich, who has played for the national team since 2016, is the right successor to the Germany captaincy from Gundogan, with Rudiger and Havertz set to become vice-captains for the new-look German side.

‘The captain leaves the team’s opinions to the coaching staff. He is a logical successor. He leads with his ideas,’ Nagelsmann said of Kimmich.
