They have invested little in the transfer market so far, signing winger Rodrigo Gomes, right-back Pedro Lima and Norwegian striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Tommy Doyle, a midfielder who joined from Manchester City last season, has become a permanent move, with Wolves paying £4.3m.

Wolves are still looking for a defender and winger to replace Kilman and Neto, but O’Neill has warned of the club’s ability to spend big.

“I hope other clubs don’t treat us like we’re very rich and ask for whatever money we want because that’s not who we are,” O’Neill said.

“We are working very hard to do something that we think will help us. The budget doesn’t look much different from last season. The club is not in a position to spend freely yet.”

“I would say the centre-forward there looks fantastic. He’s worth £55m and should we bring him in? Of course. But what we’re doing is very different and we’re trying our best to get the best.”
