The New England Patriots have confirmed the appointment of 37-year-old Jerod Mayo as their new head coach. After deciding to part ways with Bill Belichick, who worked as head coach for 24 years and led the Warriors to the Super Bowl 6 times, according to a report from Ian Rapoport of the NF Network. Mayo worked with Belichick as a Patriots player from 2008-2015 after entering the league as the 10th pick in the draft before returning to the organization when he was hired as linebackers coach. The Patriots are set to negotiate a long-term deal with Mayo in January 2023, with reports that the 37-year-old is being lined up as Belichick’s future successor before Robert Crafth does. Mayo was chosen as the new head coach without having to go through a lengthy hiring process, although Mike Vrabel, who previously played linebacker with the organization, was available as an alternative after being hired by the Tennessee Titans.
