San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel is still in doubt about a week into training camp after there was no progress on a new deal for the 26-year-old wide receiver, NFL Network reported Wednesday. ( pgzen )
According to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero, Samuel and the 49ers have been in touch and have discussed a long-term deal, but it is unclear when the two sides will reach an agreement.
Samuel requested a trade from San Francisco back in April, but the 49ers rejected it and have been adamant about keeping the 26-year-old wide receiver with the team. Although Samuel reported for mandatory minicamp in early June, he did not participate in team practices.
The former second-round pick in the 2019 draft class is set to earn just $3.98 million in 2022. Because Samuel is still under contract, if the 26-year-old wide receiver skips training camp later this month, he will be subject to a penalty under the rules. Players will essentially report to the practice squad but not participate in workouts.
