Herbert played briefly in Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers after being sidelined with an ankle issue earlier in the day. He practiced on a limited basis Wednesday, but the 26-year-old quarterback said he was feeling better and should be ready for Sunday’s big game.
“It’s better than last week. I think it’s better,” Herbert said. “It was painful during the game, the injury from the impact, but I think I’m recovering well and healing up. I think we’re moving forward.”
Herbert admitted that the repeated hits forced him to leave the game, with Taylor Heinicke filling in for him as the Chargers lost to the Steelers 10-20.
“We just play until you can’t,” Herbert said of his plan last week. “We talked about it, and the goal is to play as long as I can. Obviously, I want to play until the end.”
There had been talk they might choose to rest Herbert this weekend before the Week 5 bye week to give the 26-year-old more time to recover before returning for Week 6 against the Denver Broncos on Oct. 13.
“That’s part of the conversation. I don’t think we’re headed that way,” Herbert said. “I think it’s going to be day-to-day, see how it goes and get better. We felt like I was in a position to play last week and I felt comfortable and safe going into the game knowing that I could move my body and do everything I could to protect myself.”
‘But we got to the point where they felt it was the best decision to take me off because I couldn’t move and I couldn’t protect myself,’ ( player1688 )
