Green Bay Packers pass rusher Preston Smith, 30, is hoping the Packers’ defense will step up to make Jordan Love’s job as the starting quarterback in place of Aaron Rodgers easier, NFL Network reported Tuesday. pony88
“Personally, we felt like last year was one of our best seasons as a defense,” Smith said. “With a lot of talent on our defense, we knew we had to step up a lot, and knowing we have a young quarterback, we’re going to be huge this year. We just have to make sure we step up and do our part to help (Love) feel comfortable on the field.” ( pony88 )
‘Help him get the ball in great situations and make stops so he’s comfortable going back there and making sure we put him in great situations. Not only does it put him in great situations, but it also allows us to be comfortable putting him in great situations where the ball is in great position downfield and making stops. So we can get downfield and score touchdowns for us, do our job and build confidence throughout the season.’
The Packers defense has a lot of talent on paper and if healthy, could be one of the best units in the NFL. Smith and Rashan Gary both returned from injuries late in the season before Green Bay selected pass-rusher Lucas Van Ness with the first round of the draft, while Kenny Clark remains at the front. Devontae Wyatt and Kwon Walker should improve in Year 2 after up-and-down rookie seasons. Additionally, Jear Alexander is one of the league’s best man-to-man covers.
Love has started just once in three years in Green Bay, but seeing him practice more has Smith convinced him the transition won’t be too difficult.
“Most people didn’t really get a chance to see Jordan and what he had to do (last year),” Smith said. “We saw him practice with the team last year and when he got his chance, Jordan had a lot of talent and we had a lot of confidence in him. He has a lot of things that he can do for this team and we felt like he had a lot of confidence in him. I feel like this is the year people really get to see what Jordan is made of.”
