New York Jets acting head coach Jeff Ulbrich has named quarterbacks and playmaking coach Todd Downing to replace offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett after taking over as head coach for Gang Green following the dismissal of Robert Saleh, NFL Network reports. popslot

“This is a byproduct of looking for new perspectives,” Ulbrich said. “I’m not saying it’s a better perspective or a worse perspective, but it’s just a new perspective, a new approach. So at the end of the day, Todd has full say on the game plan and ultimately the game call.”

Despite Hackett’s close relationship with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Ulbrich insists there needs to be a change. “No matter what happened with Robert (Saleigh), we didn’t play a consistent enough game on offense,” he said.

‘It’s obviously not a shock, but we’re all familiar with the relationship he has with Nathaniel,’ Ulbrich said of Rodgers. ‘They’re great friends, they’ve been together for a long time. He understands the decision and supports it. I’m very fortunate.’

‘I knew there was going to be a change after they let Robert go,’ Rodgers added. ‘I’ve been talking to (Ulbrich) over the last two days. I know he’s been thinking about it, learning about it and I’ve told him I’m going to support him in whatever decision he makes.’

Asked if handing the play-calling duties to Downing was the only way to save Hackett’s job, Ulbrich replied: “To say that is just another testament to the humanity of Nathaniel Hackett, the fact that he would give us his body, heart and soul.”

‘And he will continue to be a key part of the success we have going forward from an offensive perspective. I feel very lucky to have him here with us.’ 

Ulbrich will lead the Jets into Monday Night action against the division rival Buffalo Bills on Monday, Oct. 14.  ( popslot )
