Denver Broncos rookie running back RJ Harvey has revealed he wants to be better than two former New Orleans Saints running backs who played under current head coach Sean Payton, NFL Network reports. ( sand357 )

Saints running backs Darren Sproles and Alvin Kamara have been standouts for the Saints under Peyton, and Broncos rookie Harvey is looking to outperform the two star running backs. 

‘I want to be like them, for sure,’ Harvey said. ‘Like Darren Sproles, he was crazy with the Saints and Kamara as well. I want to be better than them, so I’m going to work every day, improve myself, prove myself to the veterans and the coaches. I want to make an impact in this league straight away.’

For 2025, Harvey will have direct competition from Odrick Estime and Jaleel McLaughlin, as well as Tyler Badie and Blake Watson, after the Mustangs’ running game finished mediocre in Peyton’s first two years, ranking 18th in rushing yards in 2023 and moving up to 16th in 2024. Javontae Williams, now with the Dallas Cowboys, is the only other running back with more than 500 yards rushing.

At 5’8″, Harvey sits somewhere between Sproles (5’6″) and Kamara (5’10). He has strong legs, runs a 4.40-second 40-yard dash, carried for 1,416 yards and 16 touchdowns in his third season and rushed for 1,577 yards and 22 touchdowns in his fourth season with UCF, and has caught no less than 19 passes over the past three seasons.

“He understands what we’re doing really quickly. You can tell it’s really important to him,” Peyton said of Harvey. “He’ll play on third down, but he can also play on third down on the inside, on the other side of the fence. There’s a lot he can do to really fit his strengths. If you look at his stats, he’s pretty good at it.
