The 26-year-old was only unveiled at Liverpool after joining from Juventus for €15m but was not named in the squad for Sunday’s 3-0 win at Manchester United.

Spalletti said: “I wanted Chiesa to be included as a special player, without having to take part in the competition.”

“But we assess the situation together, Chiesa said he had spoken to Liverpool and needed to continue training there to prepare for his new club.

“We agree that it was the right decision and he will continue to be part of our team in the future.” 

For Federico Chiesa, he was part of the Azzurri squad for Euro 2024 that failed to defend their title after being eliminated in the round of 13 by a 0-2 defeat to Switzerland.
