The Falcons spent two first-round draft picks on defensive ends this year, with Georgia’s Jaylon Walker at No. 15 and Tennessee’s Pierce at No. 26, with Ulbrich praising the latter as a player with potential.
‘His win rate is evident, his range of motion whether it’s on the edge or his ability to counter with his 4-4 speed,’ Ulbrich said. ‘And I don’t think he gets enough credit for the power he has in his body.’
‘He’s got all the weapons. Can we improve? No doubt about it. But the starting point is much better than most.’
Ulbrich also believes Pierce has the toolset needed to make a difference on his defense after the losses of Grady Jarrett and Matt Judon, although Pierce will have to wait for his chance behind Leonard Floyd, who the Falcons’ defensive coordinator believes the rookie defensive end will make an impact soon.
“There’s a natural adaptation there,” added Falcons scout Ryan Doyal. “Because (Ulbrich) is looking for a player who’s quick, has explosive power, has a twitch, can get out there and can finish and get close to the quarterback. James is all of those things.”
‘Ulbrich needs power off the edge and James comes off the edge like crazy, so if you’re looking for a player who can really change the tempo and the rhythm of the team, that’s where James comes in.’ ( sudpung168 )
