ESPN reported that Gafford suffered the injury in the second quarter after a knee injury to Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown , who was able to continue playing.

The young center fell to the court in pain, clutching the back of his right leg, before being helped to the locker room for further treatment.  

It’s bad news for head coach Wes Unseld Jr. and the Wizards, as Gafford is already a stopgap center while starting center Thomas Bryan recovers from anterior cruciate ligament surgery last season. The timeframe for basketball activities is not yet December 2021 .

If the 23 -year- old is out for a while, the team will likely have to move Montrez Harrell up to the five position and adjust the formation to small ball .  

Gafford joined Capital One Arena in March via a trade from the Chicago Bulls and has impressed since last season, averaging 9.7 points , 4.0 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in three games this season.  

Earlier this month, he signed a new three-year contract worth $ 40.2 million, tying him to the 2025-26  season.
