Jones, a fifth-round draft pick in the 2017 class, had a career-high 2020 season, rushing the ball 201 times for 1,104 yards and nine touchdowns. He also caught 47 passes for 355 yards and two scores before Becoming a free agent on March 17, the Packers still have time to evaluate the situation on whether to close the ‘franchise tag’ on the player or not by March 9.

‘We can definitely do it. It’s something we’re working on. It is not philosophical to avoid it. There’s usually a better way. The Packers have not used the franchise tag on players since 2010.

The two sides have been working for months to reach a resolution. But the numbers haven’t been finalized, while the Packers, like many teams, have a limited salary cap and thus cannot lock Jones down with a long-term deal. But releasing him onto the free agent market is definitely a risky choice. Therefore, consideration is being given to closing the ‘franchise tag’ on the 26-year-old sprinter.

‘If that becomes something that is in the interest of the Packers, I think we will do that. But right now we’re not done,’ Gattakunts added about considering closing the tag on Jones.
