superpg1688 England legend Michael Owen has suggested VAR made a mistake by not allowing Andy Madley to review Ashley Young’s penalty from all angles.

The Toffees had a chance to win a penalty late on against Manchester United when Andre Onana parried the shot to Ashley Young, who ran towards the ball and was brought down by both Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt. The referee pointed to the spot, but the VAR room argued to look at the monitor, and after a detailed review, the referee overturned the decision. superpg1688

Owen believes the angle Madley saw on the screen made it clear that Ashley Young was diving, but further angles show that De Ligt was clearly pulling the ball, which was the fault of the VAR.

“That’s not the right angle, in my opinion,” Owen said.

“If everything we saw in real time during the game, if it was the angle that the referee saw, I would not blame the referee for not giving a penalty.

“But he didn’t get the right camera angle. He had to get the angle from behind the goal, zoom in.

“From that angle (the angle the referee saw through VAR) it looked like a dive. I agree with the referee, he could not have given a penalty based on the evidence from that angle.

“VAR didn’t help the referee at all, in my opinion. He didn’t get all the clear camera angles that he needed to make a full judgement on whether it was a foul or not.

“He saw one angle in the 18-yard box and watched it about 10 times. He saw it on the first replay, show him every angle, show him three, four, five angles.

“The corner behind the goal was the only angle he wanted, and it was the only angle he didn’t see.” ( superpg1688 )
