Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed that rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy has successfully undergone surgery to repair a torn meniscus, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports.

The Vikings selected McCarthy out of Michigan with the 10th pick in the draft to compete with Sam Darnold for the starting job after Kirk Cousins ​​left, who signed with the Atlanta Falcons. He impressed in the first game of the preseason before suffering a torn meniscus in his right knee that kept him out the rest of his rookie season. 

“We just want to make sure there’s nothing to worry about,” O’Connell said. “All the reports are positive. He’s on the same timeline and in good shape. (We) feel really good about the situation right now.”

McCarthy has also reportedly received a biologic injection as part of his knee treatment to ensure his recovery is on track, and the first-round rookie quarterback is expected to be ready for the start of training camp next year.

McCarthy’s injury has automatically given Darnold the starting role for the first nine games of the season. The 27-year-old quarterback has led the Vikings to a 7-2 record, despite throwing three interceptions in Sunday’s 12-7 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he will continue to have O’Connell’s backing.
