However, Carsley gave playmaker Zi a start in both games when he took over as caretaker manager from Southgate.

“I’ll be honest with you, I don’t really agree with that,” Grealish told the BBC.

Grealish admitted he felt he had not had the best season with his team but added: “You have to have a little bit of balance in every position on the pitch and I see myself as a fairly experienced player now.”

“I have a lot of trophies now, so you ask me if I should go (to the Euros). Yes, I still think I should go, but obviously it’s not like that.”

Asked if he thought he had to prove himself by returning to the England squad in September, he said: “Of course I want to come here to train well and play well.”

“I would like to thank Lee Carsley, the manager, for giving me the opportunity and trusting me,”

“It’s obviously meant a lot throughout my career to play under a manager who trusts me and communicates with me in the way he did in the last two camps. It’s helped me a lot.”
