He impressed enough to be included in Luciano Spalletti’s Italy squad for Thursday’s big game against Belgium and then Israel on Monday.

“I didn’t expect to be called up to the national team, even though I had some hope. Being here is a special feeling and I’m very happy,” said Gabbia.

“I will try to enjoy this week to the fullest, do my best and try to understand what the coach wants.”

The 24-year-old is one of a number of players to have earned their first senior cap, along with Michele Di Gregorio, Nicolo Pisilli and Daniel Maldini.
