“My knee was hurting, it was getting worse. I couldn’t train during the week, so I chose to do recovery to protect myself,” Ribery recalled.
“I had surgery in Austria. The surgery went well. They put in a metal plate, but my wound got badly infected almost 5 months later.
“They took the plate off, but the infection had eaten away at me. It was so bad I had holes all over my leg. I had a Staphylococcus aureus infection.
“I was in the emergency room in an Austrian hospital for 12 days. I was so scared I almost had to amputate my leg.”
Ribery recently returned to football with legendary team Bayern Munich, alongside teammate Arjen Robben, in the Beckenbauer Cup in midweek. ( sakidbet )
