The Cleveland Browns have agreed to restructure quarterback DeShaun Watson’s contract, freeing up nearly $36 million in salary-cap space, ESPN’s Field Yates reports.

Watson has two years remaining on a five-year, $230 million contract he signed in March 2022 and is owed $46 million over the next two seasons. Before the 29-year-old quarterback’s contract was restructured, the Browns were about $22 million over the salary cap. 

Watson is currently rehabbing at the team’s Berea facility after tearing his Achilles tendon in October, and general manager Andrew Barry has said the focus is now on getting Watson back to full health. The Browns still owe the 29-year-old quarterback $92 million, but Barry said that won’t deter him from moving in the free-agent market, where he’s looking for an experienced quarterback. 

The Browns have restructured Watson’s contract, saving the 29-year-old about $36 million by converting the quarterback’s salary into a signing bonus that can be paid over five years.
