Austin Abrams is eyeing the lead role in director Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ marinabays

marinabays Sony Pictures may have its first lead actor for the new “ Resident Evil ” movie . Austin Abrams, of HBO’s “Euphoria” series and Apple Studios’ “Wolfs,” is reportedly in talks to star in the Zach Krieger -directed film .

Cracker made his name with the horror film Barbarian, his first feature film, which he wrote himself. He then followed that up with the horror film Weapons, which was rumored to have received very high test scores. The film stars Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, with Abrams also in the cast. It is not yet clear who Abrams will play, but reports suggest Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield could be in the running.

Sony has plans to move the film on fast track, with production set to begin this summer in Europe, and Craiger has reportedly already scouted locations for filming.

As for the tone of the film, it is reported that it will be more of a horror film, similar to the game version, and may also have a survival thriller, instead of being a sci-fi action horror film like the version starring Milla Jovovich.

Shay Hatten of “Army of the Dead” and “John Wick: Chapter 4” will co-write the script with Kreker. The film is set for a Sept. 18, 2026, release in the United States. ( marinabays )
