In an interview with Collider , director Jake Schreier (Beef) shared that one of the inspirations for creating the image of humans being swept away by the terrifying power of the Void (Lewis Pullman ) and then the burnt shadow on the ground came from the image of the shadow of the victims of the Hiroshima nuclear bomb. “We did a lot of research, and we started with reference images that Grace had found. It was really from Hiroshima and those shadows. It came from the feeling that we didn’t want everything in the movie to look like CGI, even though we had the best special effects company in the world working on the movie. I didn’t want to do it half-heartedly. We worked hard, they worked hard. The only way to make great special effects is to get those two things right,” Schreier says.
It wasn’t just about finding reference images to create the special effects for this scene, but also about the execution. Because Shire didn’t want it to look like CGI, the event had to happen very quickly, less than two frames.
“I think with the special effects like that, developed by ILM, if we were to do more than one and a half frames of animation where they disappear and become shadows, anything longer than that would start to feel like CGI sublimation.”
The director also said that the camera angle is also important because the image of the person who becomes a shadow must be at least slightly in line with the camera to make it look as simple as possible.
The film is now in theaters. Florence Pugh returns as Yelena Belova, David Harbour returns as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell returns as John Walker or U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, and Hannah John-Kamen returns as Ghost.
